Ways To Renew, Reuse And Recycle This New Year

By Lenna Stockwell

New Year's resolutions appear almost always interesting every year. There are those who resolve to be healthier or lose weight. Others also aim to read more or even accomplish goals related to their works. But many people still resolve to be able to help Earth. Here are some good suggestions for those resolving to make 2014 a year to help the Earth.

For most of us, going off the grid is really not an option. Most people also cannot afford the expense of installing solar panels or some device on our home to capture wind energy. However, we can all reduce the amount of energy we use. Make sure lights are off unless you need them, regulate your thermostat to conserve energy use and only wash large loads of laundry to reduce energy and water usage. You also can ensure that the light bulbs and appliances that you use are the most energy efficient possible.

Water is a natural resource that people use every day, and there are ways to reduce your use of this resource. You can plant native grasses and plants in your yard as these will require less water. Time your showers and limit them to no more than three minutes. If it takes time for water to heat up, collect the water in a bucket and use it water your house plants or garden.

Some people live in an urban area where public transportation is readily available. However many Americans do not have convenient access to buses, subways and trains and must drive to work. Make a commitment to carpool with others, even if it is just two or three times per week. Maybe you are close enough to walk to work. If so, consider doing this a few times each week. Not only will it reduce your carbon footprint, you will save on gas money and get into better physical shape.

Why, to recycle is but the easiest way you can actually help our planet. Recycling programs are undertaken by several cities and towns and so you can definitely recycle things like newspaper, plastic bottles and even aluminum cans. Schools are institutions which often collect bottles or newspapers in this way you can contribute to recycling and raising money for a good cause too.

It is common understanding that most type of plastic along with all aluminum is recyclable. Note that plastic comes with two types being thermoplastic and thermoset plastic. It is the latter one that is not recyclable but as far as all forms of thermoplastic is concerned, it's recyclable potential makes it acceptable in most recycling bins in many cities whether thermoplastic packaging or thermoplastic products. From water bottles to milk jugs and even Styrofoam cups and food trays - all these are recyclable. Becoming more active in recycling should help in ensuring that less is put into your local landfill.
